Georgia Updates Animal Entry Rules After Screwworm Detection
Georgia requires permits or veterinary inspections for animals entering from five New Mexico counties following a New World screwworm detection.
The Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) is re-implementing enhanced interstate animal movement requirements for warm-blooded animals entering Georgia from five New Mexico counties following the detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in a horse in Grant County on September 17, 2026.
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler J. Harper announced the requirements, which are intended to protect the state's agricultural industry and animal health. The measures may be updated as new information becomes available.
“In light of the recent detection of NWS in a horse in Grant County, New Mexico, we are re-implementing additional animal entry requirements for animals entering Georgia from five New Mexico counties. These measures are necessary to help protect Georgia’s No. 1 industry, as well as the livestock and pets across our state,” said Harper. “Anyone bringing animals into Georgia from a designated county within New Mexico must follow these requirements to help prevent the spread of NWS. I encourage all Georgians to stay informed, follow established animal movement guidelines, and work with us to protect the health of our livestock, pets, economy, and state.”
New Mexico Counties Affected
Enhanced requirements apply to animals originating from the following counties, in addition to Georgia's standard entry requirements:
- Catron County
- Hidalgo County
- Luna County
- Sierra County
- Grant County
Requirements depend on whether animals are coming from a designated New World screwworm infested zone or from a listed county outside the infested zone.
Requirements for Animals From Infested Zones
Animals coming from an infested zone must follow national New World screwworm movement guidance and obtain a Georgia entry permit.
- Follow the NWS National Movement Guidance
- Request a Georgia entry permit at least 48 hours before entering the state.
- Email galivestockpermits@agr.georgia.gov to request a permit.
Requirements for Animals From Outside Infested Zones
Animals coming from Catron, Hidalgo, Luna, Sierra, or portions of Grant County outside the designated infested zone must meet additional requirements:
- Obtain a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI).
- Have the animals inspected and found free of New World screwworm.
- Ensure the CVI is issued within seven days of travel.
Additional animal movement requirements remain in place for animals entering Georgia from Texas.
Where to Find Current Guidance
