John Deere Adds Hands-Free Baling Automation

John Deere's Hands-Free Baling combines guidance and baler automation to reduce operator input and improve baling productivity.

John Deere has introduced Hands-Free Baling, an integrated automation system designed to reduce operator input and improve consistency when baling cornstalks and straw.

The system combines several existing John Deere technologies on select 1 Series Round Balers and compatible tractors, including AutoTrac guidance, AutoTrac Turn Automation, gate automation, speed automation, and Weave Automation.

How Hands-Free Baling Works

Hands-Free Baling uses guidance lines created during previous combine passes to automatically follow windrows. The system also uses Weave Automation to help form consistent, square-shouldered bales.

Speed and gate automation manage tractor speed and the baler's gate during the baling cycle, including stopping, wrapping, and ejecting bales. AutoTrac Turn Automation handles turns on headlands.

John Deere said the combined system is designed specifically for cornstalk and straw baling and requires less manual input from the operator.

“The hands-free baling technology combines John Deere’s legacy guidance feature, AutoTrac™, with our innovative Weave Automation round baler feature, creating a solution that was built shoulder-to-shoulder with our customers. It makes a repetitive baling job easier and more efficient,” said Kaylene Ballesteros, marketing manager for hay and forage equipment at John Deere. “By automating the baling process, we’re helping operators simplify their job and reduce the opportunity for error.”

Internal Testing Shows Productivity Gains

John Deere's internal testing compared automated and manual baling and found the Hands-Free Baling system delivered up to 8.4% more productivity, measured in bales per hour, and up to 4.4% improved fuel efficiency, measured in tons per gallon.

The company also reported up to a 76% reduction in operator activity, including steering and control inputs.

“These gains make long days in the field more manageable,” Ballesteros says. “When you can produce more bales per hour while using less fuel and requiring fewer inputs from the operator, you get the freedom to focus on what is most important to you, whether that’s making all your bales or putting a less experienced operator in the seat while you spend time tackling other priorities.”

The results are based on a 2025 internal John Deere study using a 6R 175 tractor and 561R Round Baler. The study compared automated baling, using Gate, Speed and Weave Automation, AutoTrac, and AutoTrac Turn Automation, with manual baling in central Iowa cornstalks.

Connecting Baling With Precision Ag

The system also uses guidance lines generated during earlier corn or wheat passes, connecting baling operations with other fieldwork.

John Deere said Hands-Free Baling can extend the use of existing precision agriculture technology while providing additional data visibility through the John Deere Operations Center.

The system is available on select John Deere 1 Series Round Balers paired with 6R, 7R, and 8R tractors equipped with the required precision agriculture technologies, including Weave Automation.

“Hands-Free Baling highlights how our gate and speed automation that launched over 10 years ago, continues to build on itself, unlocking more and more value,” Ballesteros says. “We’re continuing to find new ways to help farmers and ranchers improve their efficiency, reduce workload, and get the most out of every pass in the field with the investments they might already have in their fleet.”
